Rhymecology® uses the power of hip-hop lyrics and culture to help people express, discover and create themselves, while causing harm to none.
A large component of Rhymecology® is Hip-Hop Therapy. The Rhymecology® organization has been presenting and teaching on hip-hop therapy since 2006 through workshops, seminars, key-notes, published games and books on using hip-hop to heal.
Rhymecology is hip-hop culture with a therapeutic/teaching twist.
But this is more than just Hip-Hop Therapy.
Rhymecology® is a philosophy for creativity and self identity.
Jeff Walker (aka 'J Walker') is not only a seasoned writer and artist, but also has a Masters in Educational Psychology and is a Qualified Mental Health Professional who has worked with at-risk youth for 15 years. This is the glue that makes Rhymecology® what it is. Combining his talent of being a lyricist, counselor, coach and motivational speaker, J Walker has developed youth programs from his extensive work with "at risk" youth in the greater Los Angeles area, that is now available to all Mental Health Professionals, Mental Health Organizations and Schools.
Whether it be lyric writing workshops where youth create songs, raps, lyrics and poems, in a safe, creative and fun environment; or through live performances and motivational talks, or Training programs for Therapists and Teachers, Rhymecology® brings the science of psychology and coolness of music together, to help people become empowered, feel better about themselves and the world they live in.

These three brothers had a difficult time expressing what they had gone through with their mother, until they were given a chance to write their feelings in rhyme. Each week they were given an assignment leading up to this recording. First they were to identify the feelings which came up when thinking about their mother. Then (with assistance) decide what words rhymed with their feelings and create a story with those. The third week they were asked to memorize the story and this is that story.
My client had been a victim of bullying but had never expressed how he felt about it. After hearing rappers express vulnerability, he decided to try it himself.
For clients battling depression and drug abuse, there is power in urging them to write positive feelings and thoughts down in a rap format.
Until the Rhymecology sessions, this teenage father only rapped about violence and drugs.
When he was asked to look within and write from the heart...this was the result.
Young Black Male
In the wake of the recent police shootings of young black men, this client took to the pen and paper to vent his frustrations, fear and feelings.
He never talked to any therapist. Except the one time we used Rhymecology.
