Study The Greats with J Walker
We all have a story to tell. We all want to be unique and original.
The goal of songwriting is to tell that story in a unique way so that others want to hear it over and over.
Before you get there, study the great writers who paved the way for you.
With a bit of research you will find that transcendental poets in all genres
have stretched the boundaries and limits of imagination, time and time again.
Often their genius is lost in the microwave pop culture that we live in.
For emcees/rappers, yes, study what Eminem did
but before that study what AZ did
but before that study what Rakim did
but before that study what Grandmaster Caz did.
And don't keep it to hip-hop, study the great songwriters like Paul Simon, Bob Dylan and Carol King.
Understand the foundations of their poetry, of their rhyme schemes and then build upon it while telling your story.
